We’ve got a busy week of Colorado weather ahead, with several rounds of snow likely after this morning’s foothills slush storm.
DENVER — FORECAST BY: 9NEWS Weather Impact Team Meteorologists Chris Bianchi and Keely Chalmers
THE FORECAST AT A GLANCE:
One storm moves out, another is moving in. We saw some pretty impressive snow totals in the mountains over the last 24 hours. Well over a foot of new snow fell at some of our favorite ski areas. Light snow fell in and around the Denver Metro area, but we didn’t see any accumulation with it in town.
We get a brief break in the winter-like weather tonight and tomorrow. The break won’t last all that long, though: We’ve already issued a Weather Impact Day for Wednesday, with a slower, stronger storm system likely to bring accumulating snow to the metro area.
Totals with the next storm will vary widely: the foothills west of Denver will probably get several (4″+) of snow, while areas north and east of Denver (including Fort Collins and Greeley ) may only see a dusting to an inch or two of snow. The Palmer Divide and south will likely get inches of snowfall as well.
The big question will be where and how that storm moves. This storm is a so-called “cutoff low”, meaning it’s detached from the jet stream with nothing to move it. That means the storm will likely sit and spin for several days, pumping in snow to southern Colorado before potential moving back over the Plains and bringing another bigger storm with it.
Be ready for a wintry week with several rounds of snow, with Wednesday and Friday night/Saturday morning looking like the main time windows for Denver-area snow.
