Sunshine and 50s Sunday ahead of colder weather and snow to start the week

THE FORECAST AT A GLANCE:

Denver’s first snowfall is possible overnight into early Monday ahead of a cooler and unsettled week.

Winter weather advisories cover most of the Colorado mountains from 11am Sunday to 11am Monday. 3 to 10 inches of snow is expected for most locations including the Front Range foothills from 7,000 to 9,000 feet.

Most of us on the Front Range might not even notice the storm until after the sun sets tonight when scattered rain showers could cover parts of the area from 6pm to midnight. Those showers will likely turn to snow overnight making for a potentially slower commute on Monday morning. Areas south of the metro could see a rain/snow transition after about 9pm.

There is the potential for most of the Denver area to get between about .5-3 inches of snow although some spots could get less than an inch as the temperature will likely not drop below 30 degrees.

That snow probably won’t stick to the roads in most of the core part of the Denver area, but a slow and slushy commute is still likely. The higher suburbs to the south and west of Denver has a better chance for a snowy impact on the roadways.

The storm is forecast to move out of the Front Range by late morning tomorrow.

Election Day is Tuesday, and the skies will clear out through the afternoon hours, but temperatures only rise into the lower 50s.

Another storm system is expected to move down from northern Canada on Wednesday and it could stick around for several days, with at least the potential to bring heavy snow to the Front Range.

The area of low pressure is forecast to get cutoff from the jet stream and impact Colorado twice essentially. Once on the way down from the north and then again as it exits the region. There’s fairly low confidence in the track and intensity of this system at this point but it’s potential should have your attention over the next several days.

TUESDAY: Partly sunny and chilly, chance for a snow shower late night, high 53. Mostly cloudy overnight, low 28.

WEDNESDAY: Mostly cloudy with a chance for snow, high 34. Mostly cloudy and cold overnight, low 26.

THURSDAY: Partly cloudy with a chance for snow, high 36. Cloudy overnight, low 27.

FRIDAY: Partly cloudy with snow showers possible or flurries, high 40. Partly cloudy overnight, low 28.

SATURDAY: Partly to mostly sunny and mild, high 48. Partly cloudy overnight, low 32.

SUNDAY: Partly to mostly sunny and warmer, high 55. Partly cloudy overnight, low 34.
