A spokesperson for the hospital said the shooting might have been related to domestic violence.
GREELEY, Colo. — The suspect in a shooting Thursday morning that injured a woman at UCHealth Greeley Hospital was later found dead inside a home in Evans, according to Greeley Police.
Just after 8 a.m., police responded to the hospital at 6767 W. 29th St. for a report of a shooting. The victim, a 35-year-old woman, was shot multiple times in the parking lot but managed to walk into the emergency room for treatment, Greeley Police said. She is expected to survive.
The shooter fled the scene before officers arrived. As a result of the shooting, the hospital was placed on “secure status,” according to Greeley Police.
While at the hospital, investigators learned the suspect had fled to a home in the 1900 block of McNitt Street in Evans. Officers from both the Greeley and Evans Police departments responded.
Because the home is near both the Chappelow Arts Magnet School, in the 2000 block of 35th Street, and the Dos Rios Elementary School, at 2201 34th Street, Greeley-Evans District 6 was notified. The schools were temporarily placed on a lockdown status, but normal operations have since resumed.
When police arrived at the home on McNitt they found a car on fire in the driveway. Flames spread to the home before firefighters brought it under control.
Officers made brief contact with the suspect and confirmed he was alone but barricaded inside the home.
The Greeley SWAT Team and Weld County Regional SWAT Team responded but were unable to get any response from the man. They eventually entered the home and found the man deceased. Police only identified him as a 38-year-old and did not give information about how he died.
Police said they believe the victim and suspect are known to each other and the shooting was not random. A statement from UCHealth indicated the shooting was domestic violence-related.
Anyone who has information about the shooting and has not spoken with officers is asked to call Greeley Police at 970-350-9605.
If you or someone you know is experiencing domestic violence, please call the National DV Hotline at 1-800-799-7233, or our Victim’s Services Unit locally at (970) 350-9605. Additional resources are available on the police department’s website: https://greeleypd.com/victim-assistance/.
