Mountain snow, Denver-area rain this morning; windy this afternoon

A fairly active weather Monday will feature some locally hefty snow in the high country this morning before wind becomes our bigger story this afternoon.

DENVER — FORECAST BY: 9NEWS Weather Impact Team Meteorologist Chris Bianchi

THE FORECAST AT A GLANCE:

It’s an active weather morning across Colorado, with some fairly heavy mountain snow along and north of I-70 and the possibility of a few rain showers in the Denver area and northeastern Colorado as well.

A Winter Weather Advisory is up until noon for parts of the mountains, where 4-8 inches of snow could fall in total by the time the snow ends later on this morning or early this afternoon. That snow will be heaviest early this morning, be careful on all of the main passes (including the Eisenhower-Johnson tunnels)!

Meanwhile in Denver, we’ll have more clouds than sun this morning before some rain tries to move in. However, downsloping northwest winds will make it hard for much of the rain to survive. The foothills and south metro will have the better chances for a rain shower (60-ish percent in those areas), while in Denver and nearby most of us probably stay dry, with only around a 40 percent chance at a shower.

Wind will be the main story this afternoon as our low pulls away and clears out our skies. That wind could gust up to 40 mph in Denver and up to 50 mph in the foothills. That wind hangs around and perhaps picks up in the foothills tonight, while the wind will relax for the immediate I-25 corridor (including Denver).

A ridge of high pressure moves in for tomorrow, spiking temperatures into the mid-70s under sun-splashed skies. We’ll stay sunny and warm most of the week, with highs in the 70s until Friday, when a weak cold front drops in and briefly reduces our highs back into the 60s. We warm right back up for the weekend, with highs in the 70s.

We’re keeping an eye on a potential notable pattern flip for next week, with the European model strongly hinting at an active weather week starting as early as Monday or Tuesday of next week. Until then and after today, we’re mostly on the mild and tranquil side.

Careful on our high country roads this morning, and watch out for the wind this afternoon!
