Near-record heat and high fire danger today and tomorrow

Temperatures spike back into the 80s today after a chilly start, and we’ll increase fire danger for tomorrow in particular.

DENVER — FORECAST BY: 9NEWS Weather Impact Team Meteorologist Chris Bianchi

THE FORECAST AT A GLANCE:

After a cooler Thursday with a high temperature of just 70° in Denver, we’ll rebound those highs quickly for both today and this weekend.

We’ll start on a chilly note with a few frost advisories this morning north and east of Denver (those advisories include Fort Collins and Greeley) before temperatures jump right back into the low 80s for a high in Denver (average: 71°).

There is some high fire danger in our northern mountains for today, but fire danger really jumps for tomorrow as winds increase. Highs on Saturday will be either at or near record levels in many areas including Denver, but the bigger story will be those dangerous fire conditions.

A combination of 40-50 mph winds in the foothills (more like 30-35 mph on the Eastern Plains) and a very warm and dry airmass will lead to critical fire conditions across most of Colorado on Saturday. It’s a don’t-be-stupid day: Avoid anything with a spark outdoors and make sure you have a go kit ready to go as well.

Temperatures fall back a bit for Sunday and the Broncos’ home game, with a high of ‘only’ 80°. But we’ll stay in the low-to-mid 80s for most of next week before perhaps some changes next weekend, though it’s way too early to get into details about those. There are no meaningful rain chances across most of the state over the next week.

In the meantime, it’s full-fledged summer with an extra eye on high fire danger over the next few days.
