‘Bratty’ marmots embarrass CPW as they’re released back into the wild

The six marmots were “content to live in the crate filled with nuts forever,” Colorado Parks and Wildlife said.

COLORADO, USA — Colorado Parks and Wildlife announced today they have released six “bratty” marmots back into the wild.

In June, a marmot mother hitched a ride down Mount Blue Sky in a car engine with her family. The mother had the marmot pups in a Lafayette garage.

Unfortunately a few days later, the mother was hit by a car.

Greenwood Wildlife took in the six newborn marmot pups that “looked like Twinkies,” according to CPW. The wildlife center has been rehabilitating the marmots to be ready for their release back into the wild.

CPW said they carried a heavy crate with the marmots up a hill near rock formations and abandoned marmot dens at Staunton State Park. This was to help the six marmots avoid conflict with the other marmots in the area since the animals can be territorial.

But as the organization tried to release the marmots, the six of them wouldn’t come out of the crate.

After some prodding from crews, two of the marmots finally got out of the crate. However, the other four were “content to live in the crate filled with nuts forever,” according to CPW.

Eventually, CPW took away the crate, but still, the marmots didn’t leave the area. After a while, the remaining marmots left, but were “unamused the whole time,” CPW said. The organization claimed they ran out of phone storage waiting for the marmots to leave.
