Hot weekend will ensure September ends as Denver’s warmest on record

It will also remain very dry with elevated fire danger each day.

DENVER — FORECAST BY: 9NEWS Weather Impact Team Meteorologist Chris Spears

TODAY AT A GLANCE:

It may be the end of September, but it will feel more like the end of July around Colorado this weekend. Afternoon highs will climb up close to record levels on both Saturday and Sunday. The high country will be in the 70s while the eastern plains and western slope will range from the upper 80s to the lower 90s.

It’s been a very warm September so far in Denver with an average temperature of 69.8° through the 27th. We are currently in first place on the list of warmest Septembers observed. Unfortunately, our very warm forecast will ensure we keep this ranking in Denver’s weather history.

Other than scattered clouds and potentially a few isolated showers in the mountains it will be dry and breezy at times. Our fire danger will be elevated each afternoon. Wind speeds could be as high as 25 mph.

The unusually warm weather will stick around into next week as we turn the calendar to the month of October. The only exception will be Tuesday, when highs should fall back closer to normal for this time of year. The cooler weather will filter in behind a dry cold front associated with a storm that will pass well to our north.

If the cooler weather excites you, make plans to enjoy it, because it won’t last long. Starting Wednesday, our highs will climb right back into the 80s and close to 90 degrees at times. In Denver, the latest 90 degree reading on record was recorded October 1, 1892.

SATURDAY: Sunny and very warm, breezy at times, high 88. Mostly clear overnight, low 57.

SUNDAY: Sunny and hot, high around 90 (record: 92°). Mostly clear overnight, low 58.

MONDAY: Mostly sunny, warm and breezy, high 89. Mostly clear overnight but turning cooler, low 42.

TUESDAY: Mostly sunny and much cooler, high 75. Mostly clear overnight, low 48.

WEDNESDAY: Mostly sunny and very warm again, high 86 (record: 88°). Mostly clear overnight, low 53.

THURSDAY: Mostly sunny and continued warm, high 87. Mostly clear overnight, low 50.
