2 Colorado middle school students overdose on psilocybin mushrooms

Damien Solano was arrested for selling four juveniles psilocybin mushrooms, police said. Two of them overdosed at a Colorado Springs middle school.

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. — A 21-year-old man has been arrested after two middle school students overdosed on psilocybin mushrooms.

On Tuesday morning, Colorado Springs authorities were alerted to two juveniles who overdosed on psilocybin mushrooms at Fox Meadow Middle School. Both were transported to the hospital for medical attention, according to a news release.

Detectives learned through interviews that there were two additional juveniles were also victims of narcotics distribution from an adult. The four victims, ranging in age from 12 to 16, were communicating with the dealer through the Telegram app and purchased the mushrooms in the parking lot of a King Soopers on Cheyenne Meadows Road, police said.

Detectives were able to recover the remaining mushrooms from the victims’ parents and contacted the suspected seller, later identified as 21-year-old Damien Solano, through one of their phones, posing as a juvenile buyer, to set up another transaction.

During the undercover operation, police were able to positively identify Solano as the dealer from the description the victims provided authorities. Solano was carrying two ounces of psilocybin mushrooms that was ordered by a detective through the Telegram app when he was arrested, according to police.

He was arrested and booked on the following charges:

  • Four counts of unlawful distribution, manufacturing, dispensing or sale
  • One count of unlawful distribution, manufacturing, dispensing or sale (attempted)
  • Four counts of contributing to the delinquency of a minor
