Sunshine and 90s today, tracking cooler weather and chance for showers midweek

A mix of clouds and sun on another very warm late Summer day! Temps are running way above average but a midweek cool front could change that!

DENVER — FORECAST BY: 9NEWS Weather Impact Team Meteorologist Keely Chalmers, Kathy Sabine

THE FORECAST AT A GLANCE:

If you like summer weather, you are in luck! The summer-like weather will continue for the week ahead. The 90 degree high temperature recorded yesterday was the  58th 90-degree day of the year bringing us closer to making the top 5 most of all-time.

Today’s forecast is looking similar to yesterday’s. There will be just enough moisture sliding into the state under a ridge of high pressure for widely scattered showers and storms across the mountains and foothills once again. These stray showers will start in the early afternoon and last to about sunset. A stray shower or isolated gusty storm could form over the urban corridor after about 3:00 this afternoon.

In Denver, early sunshine will help temperatures to warm into the low 90s. Clouds will increase in the afternoon. The average high this time of year is in the lower 80s!

You may have noticed a slight haze in the air yesterday and today. It’s the result of wildfire smoke filtering in as westerly flow brings in some smoke from fires burning in the Pacific Northwest.

By the middle of next week, a storm system will approach Colorado from the west.  Winds are likely to increase as the trough of low pressure approaches. Wednesday looks to be the cooler day of the week with a 30% chance of showers.

Gusty winds with warm dry weather may prompt warnings for high fire danger later this week.
