Family is ‘lost’ after man dies of injuries from Westminster assault

Jonathan George, 34, was taken off life support three weeks after he was found severely beaten and unconscious near a gas station in Westminster.

WESTMINSTER, Colo. — The scope of a criminal investigation in Westminster has changed course three weeks after a man was found severely beaten and unconscious near a gas station.

The family of Jonathan George, 34, made the decision to take him off life support last week after he was attacked by unknown suspects on Oct. 20 near a gas station at 121st Avenue and Huron Street.

Police said they believe the attack occurred about 7:30 p.m. when George walked to a gas station on an errand.

For three weeks, George was in the hospital with multiple skull fractures until he was declared brain dead by doctors after a second brain bleed. On Nov. 10, George was taken off life support and his organs were donated.

His widow, Ericka Halte, said her family is dealing with grief and agony in the wake of his passing. George leaves behind two sons, including a 3 year old boy.

‘It’s heartbreaking to tell your son he will no longer see his daddy. I’m lost. I’m numb. I don’t want to feel anything. My days are mushed together. It’s a big struggle,” Halte said.

She said the family later learned George called 911 that night but then declined police assistance. She said police told her they have a recording of the call.

“In the background, they could hear multiple people screaming, having a confrontation with him,” Halte said of the 911 call. “And that’s when he declined any kind of assistance. Said he was close to home and he would make it home.”

Police have not officially declared the case a homicide investigation but put out a crime alert this week, asking for the public’s help in tracking down the attackers. So far, investigators have not located any camera footage of the incident, according to a department spokesperson.

Police are asking anyone with information about the attack to call them at 303-658-4360.

The family has set up this Gofundme account to help with expenses.
