Brighton Police said the pedestrian was struck twice — the driver in the first crash took off but the second driver stayed at the scene.
BRIGHTON, Colo. — A driver wanted in connection with a hit-and-run crash last month in Brighton that left a man with severe injuries has turned himself in, police said on Wednesday.
Lazaro Maya, 35, turned himself in on Nov. 4. He’s believed to be the driver who struck a man around 7:15 p.m. on Oct. 4 in the area of North Main Street/County Road 27 and County Road 2 1/2.
Police responded to that area for a report about a person who had been struck by two drivers.
When officers arrived, they found a 22-year-old man in the roadway with severe injuries. Police said their preliminary investigation revealed that the man was walking when he was hit by a driver who then left the scene. A second driver who did not see the man on the road also hit him but stayed at the scene, according to police.
The driver who left the scene was believed to have been driving a black 2000 Honda Civic that likely had damage to the front and the driver’s side mirror. Police said they’ve recovered the vehicle and it’s being processed for evidence.
Maya was arrested for leaving the scene of a crash involving serious bodily injury and driving without a license.
Anyone who witnessed the crash or has more information is asked to call the Brighton Police Department tip line at 303-655-8740.
