First frost, snow in the forecast: Tracking weather changes in Colorado

Now is the time to winterize your sprinkler system as a Frost Advisory says sensitive outdoor plants may be killed if left uncovered.

DENVER — A Frost Advisory has been issued for parts of Colorado as the forecast turns more autumn-like in the week ahead.

The National Weather Service issued a Frost Advisory from midnight Thursday until 9 a.m. Friday for portions of Arapahoe, Adams, Weld, Lincoln, Elbert, Douglas, Washington, Sedgwick, Morgan and Phillips counties.

The National Weather Service said temperatures could drop as low as 32 early Friday morning and could result in frost formation in portions of east central, north central, and northeast Colorado.

“Frost could harm sensitive outdoor vegetation. Sensitive outdoor plants may be killed if left uncovered,” the National Weather Service said.

After a warm weekend ahead in Colorado with high temperatures around 80 degrees on Sunday and Monday, a big cooldown will arrive just in time for Halloween.

If the models hold, a storm will approach from the west, bringing Colorado a big cooldown starting on Tuesday. Denver will see a 50+ degree swing between Sunday and Wednesday.

Highs will tumble into the 40s and 50s in Denver with the Front Range’s first freeze of the season looking very likely next week, with rain on Tuesday night potentially flipping to snow by Wednesday morning. Snow amounts look minimal, with perhaps a bit of slush in Denver, but it might count as our first snow of the season.

Make sure to get those sprinklers blown out if you haven’t already as Colorado could see a few days of sub-freezing temperatures for the first time this season next week.

The 9NEWS Weather Impact team will keep a close eye on that storm system, but in the meantime, enjoy the warmer weather while we’ve got it.
