Man accused of shooting Auraria Campus Police officer identified

The man is being held on two counts of attempted homicide after the shooting early Monday morning.

DENVER — One person is in custody after a shooting on Auraria Campus that injured a campus police officer.

The shooting happened at about 1:18 a.m. Monday morning, according to Auraria Campus Police. The suspect was contacted by two campus police officers after breaking into a vehicle, police said in a release. The suspect fled and was later found by the officers, according to police.

Officers used a taser in an attempt to take the suspect into custody, according to police. It is unclear if the taser made contact with the suspect, according to police. The suspect fired multiple shots, hitting one officer in the arm, police said.

The suspect fled from officers again before being arrested by both Auraria Campus and Denver Police officers, according to the Auraria Campus Police.

The suspect was taken to the hospital for evaluation of possible injuries. He’s been identified as 29-year-old Aaron Veneer. He was arrested and is being held on two counts of attempted homicide and one count of assault on a peace officer.
