Scattered showers late Friday

Scattered showers late Friday, heavier across the plains.

DENVER — FORECAST BY: 9NEWS Weather Impact Team Meteorologist Laurann Robinson

FORECAST AT A GLANCE: Cooler, wet weather has taken over Colorado.

Friday afternoon, highs dropped nearly 20 degrees from the middle 70s we saw Thursday, as highs maxed out near 57 degrees.

Late Friday, scattered showers push in from the southwest, hitting the front range as on-and-off showers after 4 p.m. To the west, the foothills and high country will see a dusting of snow. The heaviest precipitation is expected to fall across the southwestern corner of Colorado as heavy snow across the San Juans, and across the eastern plains as heavy rainfall.

Saturday, it’s looking like the majority of the rainfall/snowfall will fall south of the I-70 corridor, after some early rain showers across the Denver metro. The larger focus of the day will certainly be the cooler air, with afternoon temperatures staying nearly 15 degrees below-average, in the middle 50s.

With the heaviest precipitation expected to the south, the southwestern high country will see a few winter weather alerts from Friday morning through noon Sunday. Prepare for Winter Storm Warnings across most of the San Juans, for a couple feet of new snowfall. Additionally, eastern portions of the San Juan, as well as portions of the Sangre de Cristos, will be under Winter Weather Advisories for up to a foot of new snowfall. With winds gusting between 35 to 45 mph, watch for blowing snow to reduce visibility and create hazardous travel.

Temperatures start to rebound, Sunday, with Denver highs in the upper 60s. Precipitation will start to move out, as well, with only slight rain chances across the urban corridor.

As we start the next workweek, sunny and mild conditions settle in. We’ll see the return of dry, sunny skies and highs in the lower to  middle 70s.
