Warm week ahead followed by possible winter storm

A relatively warm week with lots of sunshine lies ahead but significant snow could be coming to the mountains by the weekend.

DENVER — FORECAST BY: 9NEWS Weather Impact Team Meteorologist Cory Reppenhagen

FORECAST AT A GLANCE:

It will be a cold start to the workweek with lows on the Front Range possibly dropping into the 30’s on Monday morning. The coldest temperature so far this fall in Denver is 39 degrees which happened back on Oct. 1. The Monday forecast: 40 degrees.

The coldest air outside of the mountains will be on the northeast plains where a frost advisory is in place for the northeast plains including Yuma, Phillips and Sedgwick counties in Colorado. The temperatures there could reach as low as 34 degrees on Monday morning.

Light showers moving across the mountains on early Monday morning could leave a light dusting on a few high peaks but overall, the precipitation will be light and insignificant. The Front Range will stay dry through the day on Monday.

The high temperatures on Monday will be well above normal, likely hitting the 80-degree mark in Denver.

And it will be more of the same for the next several days with high pressure still the dominant feature over the Rockies. Temperatures will remain above normal and for the most part it will be dry.

The middle of the week will turn windy at times due to an approaching storm system. That will significantly elevate the fire danger and we could even see some areas reach Red Flag criteria.

By Friday, a winter-like storm will begin to impact the region. No consistent solution has emerged from model simulations, but it could bring the coldest temperatures of the season to the Front Range and some significant snow accumulation to parts of the mountains.

For now, the forecast for Denver is calling some scattered rain showers on Friday into Saturday with the temperatures staying just above freezing on Saturday and Sunday morning. Snow accumulation doesn’t appear likely at this time, but a rain/snow mix early Saturday morning looks possible.

There’s still a lot of time before the system actually takes shape in reality so keep a close eye on this interesting forecast. Details will gradually get clearer as we get closer to impact.
