Cooler Sunday with some clouds and hazy smoke

A weak cold front will keep the area cool-ish on Sunday with highs in the low 70’s. Unusually warm weather for the week ahead, with a bigger cooldown next weekend.

DENVER — FORECAST BY: 9NEWS Weather Impact Team Meteorologist Cory Reppenhagen

FORECAST AT A GLANCE:

A weak overnight cold front will help keep temperatures closer to normal on Sunday with highs in the low 70’s across the Front Range. Great weather for Broncos patio parties and tailgating.

No precipitation is expected with the cold front, and it will not be able to keep the wildfire smoke away either. Expect a little bit more haze as fires in Utah and Wyoming continue to burn.

Some cold air will move into the northeast plains on Sunday night. A frost advisory has been issued for parts of Nebraska and Kansas, along with Yuma, Phillips and Sedgwick counties in Colorado. Temperatures could reach as low as 34 degrees on Monday morning.

The Front Range and eastern plains will be dry, but a few scattered rain and snow showers will move across the mountains on Sunday into Monday morning.

Then high pressure rebuilds on Monday afternoon and will keep the high temperatures through Thursday about 10-15 degrees above normal for this time of year. That stretch should also be dry on the Front Range except for an isolated shower possible on Wednesday night.

The last 10 days of October may end up being significantly cooler as a major pattern change is forecast to start on Friday. The coldest air of the season will likely be moving into Colorado along with a decent shot at some rain on Friday night. If there’s any moisture left over on Saturday morning, Denver could see a rain/snow mix.

At this point Denver’s first freeze and it’s first snow accumulation is not in the forecast, but it could come very close, so keep a close eye on the forecast in the coming days. As the storm gets closer, the details get clearer.

Denver’s normal first freeze of the season is around October 7. So far this year our coldest official temperature has been 39 degrees back on Oct 1. The normal first measurable snow of the season is around October 18. A measurable snow is defined an accumulation of 0.1″ or more.
