Driver arrested in rollover crash that killed 2 people in Greeley

Greeley Police said a truck with five people in it rolled multiple times in the two-vehicle crash.

GREELEY, Colo. — The driver of a truck involved in Friday morning’s fatal rollover crash in Greeley has been arrested.

Two people were killed, and two others remain in the hospital with life-threatening injuries after the truck rolled over several times, according to the Greeley Police Department.

Police said Hector Castaneda Lopez, 48, was charged two counts of vehicular homicide and two counts of vehicular assault. Both charges are felonies.

Greeley Police said he was arrested in Loveland on Saturday after being cleared from the hospital and was booked into the Weld County Jail. He has since been released. Police said excessive speed, dangerous driving and unrestrained occupants were contributing factors to the accident and injuries.

According to Greeley Police, several officers responded to multiple calls about a serious two-vehicle accident on Highway 34, near Highway 257, at about 6:45 a.m.

Highway 34 was shut down in both directions as multiple officers and ambulances responded to the scene, police said. A passenger truck had rolled over multiple times, and four of the five people inside were ejected during the accident. According to police, all five injured people were brought to a local hospital. Two of those people died, and two remain there with life-threatening injuries. Castaneda Lopez was not ejected during the accident.

The driver of the other vehicle was not injured and stayed on scene, and police said they are cooperating with the investigation.

Once the injured people were taken from the scene of the crash, Highway 34 eastbound was reopened. Police said Highway 34 westbound remained closed for several additional hours while the Greeley Police Department Traffic Unit investigated.

The investigation is ongoing, and police said Weld County Coroner will release identities of the people who died once their families have been notified.

Greeley Police Department’s Traffic Unit ask that anyone with information of the accident call them at 970-350-9605.
