Team from Wyoming recovers body of hiker who fell from Colorado mountain

Local search crews were unable to recover the man’s body because of dangerous terrain and bad weather.

GRAND COUNTY, Colo. — A search and rescue team from Wyoming has recovered the body of a hiker who fell off of a mountain in Colorado more than a month ago.

The Grand County Sheriff’s Office said they and Grand County Search and rescue were assisted by a specialized team from Teton County, Wyoming to recover the body. The 31-year-old man from Boulder County had fallen about 300-400 feet off of Arikaree Peak on Aug. 28, the sheriff’s office said. At its peak, Arikaree Peak is about 13,000-feet high.

The sheriff’s office said the specialized rescue team offered additional equipment and technical expertise and consisted of members of Teton County Search and Rescue and the National Park Service, according to a release. They were able to navigate the difficult terrain that had posed a challenge to two previous recovery efforts.

“My thanks to our partner agencies including Grand County Search and Rescue, Grand County Coroner’s Office, Colorado Search and Rescue, Boulder County, Rocky Mountain Rescue Group, Alpine Rescue Team, the Colorado Army National Guard, Med Evac, Teton County Search and Rescue, National Park Service, and the United States Forest Service for their diligence in safely recovering the decedent and returning him to his family while weighing the importance of rescuer and responder safety,” said Grand County Sheriff Brett Schroetlin in a statement.

The man’s body was transferred to the Grand County coroner, who will release his identity and the cause and manner of his death.
