Man accused of fatally stabbing 20-year-old with sword

The stabbing happened Sunday morning near the intersection of South Lipan Street and West Evans Avenue.

DENVER — A man is dead after he was stabbed with a sword on Sunday, according to a Denver Police probable cause statement.

The Denver Police Department said the suspect, 39-year-old Patrick Browne, was arrested for investigation of first-degree murder and felony menacing in connection with the stabbing of a 20-year-old man.

According to the PC statement, the victim and a passenger in the car were driving at 11 a.m. Sunday when they stopped at a stoplight on West Evans Avenue. As they were waiting to turn onto South Lipan Street, Browne was standing on the sidewalk and began arguing with the two occupants in the car.

The two responded back, and as the victim was making the turn, Browne threw a drink through the front passenger window of the car and the drink hit the passenger, police said.

The victim pulled over, and both occupants got out of the car to approach Browne. In return, Browne pulled out a 2- or 3-foot-long sword from his suitcase and said he would stab the two males, according to the PC statement.

The passenger told the victim to get back in the car, but the victim stood at the back of the car and waited to see what Browne would do. Browne went to the driver’s side of the car, and the passenger saw Browne stab the victim in the stomach with the sword, the PC statement says.

The victim got into the car and started to drive away as Browne was making his way to the passenger’s window. The victim passed out behind the wheel, so the passenger had to stop the car, police say.

The victim was pronounced dead at the hospital. His identity hasn’t been released yet. The case is still under investigation.

According to DPD, the men did not know each other.
