Feeling more like August for the first week of fall

The heat is on for today and tomorrow, with record high temperatures likely for Thursday.

DENVER — THE FORECAST BY: 9NEWS Weather Impact Team Meteorologist Chris Bianchi

FORECAST AT A GLANCE:

Our continued hot and dry pattern will mostly continue uninterrupted for the next week to 10 days, with near-record heat likely into this weekend and next week.

Highs today spike into the upper 80s (average: 76°) underneath a big ridge of high pressure anchored over the western U.S. High temperatures statewide will be running 10-15 degrees above average for late September.

We maximize those temperatures tomorrow, with a high around 90° on Thursday. That’d mark our 8th-latest 90° reading on record in Denver, and it’d also tie our daily record of 90° set back in 2010.

There will perhaps be some subtle influence on our current hot and dry weather pattern from what’s likely to be Hurricane Helene in the Gulf of Mexico. That storm will eventually reinforce an area of low pressure across the southeastern U.S., and it’ll continue to keep us toasty through this weekend. We could be near a daily record once again on Sunday.

The mountains have a slight chance for a few gusty showers and storms on Friday, but otherwise the state should just about stay fully dry into next week.

There are no meaningful rain chances for the Denver area through the middle of next week, and we really don’t have any big temperature dips or storms on the horizon over the next 10-14 days either.

This heat will likely mean we finish with one of our hottest Septembers on record, and current projections (graphic below) have us finishing with our warmest September ever recorded in Denver.
