Fireworks prompted a large police response at Monarch High School

The high school was placed on hold status while the school was cleared. The hold status has since been lifted.

LOUISVILLE, Colo. — Fireworks that were detonated inside a bathroom at Monarch High School were mistaken for gunfire, which prompted the school to be placed on hold status as police investigated and cleared the school on Monday morning.

Officers from the Louisville Police Department and surrounding agencies responded to a report of shots fired inside Monarch High School at 11:17 a.m.

It was quickly determined that there was no active threat or indication of gunfire, according to Louisville Police. They found evidence of fireworks being detonated, which prompted reports of possible gunfire. The spokesman confirmed that fireworks were set off inside a bathroom at the school.

“We take all reports of potential threats very seriously,” said Police Chief Rafael Gutierrez. “In situations like this, our priority is the safety and well-being of everyone involved. We are grateful for the swift cooperation of the school staff and the prompt response of our officers.”

A spokesman for the Boulder Valley School District said the school was placed in a hold status. Under hold status, hallways are cleared to allow personnel to respond, classroom doors are closed and locked, and learning continues as normal until the “all clear.”

About an hour later, the hold status was lifted and things returned to normal. All students and staff are safe.

The Louisville Police Department is investigating the origin of the fireworks. Anyone with information is asked to contact the department at 303-441-4444 or submit an anonymous tip through SafeToTell.

Police encouraged parents to talk with their children about the importance of safety protocols and reporting any suspicious activity.
