High fire danger with near-record heat in Denver today

A combination of hot temperatures, gusty 30-40 mph winds, and a very dry airmass will make today a high fire danger day for much of Colorado.

DENVER — FORECAST BY: 9NEWS Weather Impact Team Meteorologist Chris Bianchi

THE FORECAST AT A GLANCE:

We’ve got a hot and dry day ahead with high fire danger across much of Colorado before a cooldown for Friday and this weekend.

High fire danger is the main story today though, with a high temperature near 91° in Denver today, which is just a few degrees off the daily record of 94° set back in 1911. Coupled with 30-40 mph gusts across parts of the Front Range (especially south and east of Denver) and a very dry air mass, and any fire that starts could spread quickly today.

It’s a don’t-be-stupid day: Avoid anything with a spark outside, and have a go kit ready just in case a fire starts near you.

On top of the high fire danger, we’ll also have wildfire smoke in the air this afternoon due to fires in California. That’ll create a hazy look to our skies today and early tonight.

But a dry cold front arrives tonight, and that’ll reduce our wind and it should push out the wildfire smoke as well. It’ll also drop our high temperatures into the low 80s (average: 81°) for tomorrow, a more seasonal look to things. We’ll stay dry tomorrow with mostly sunny skies and light winds, so it should overall be a nice day!

Highs tick back up to the mid-to-upper 80s for both Saturday and Sunday (it’s looking good for both the Rocky Mountain Showdown and the Broncos’ home opener) before a few mountain storms and perhaps one or two I-25 storms move back into the picture for Monday and maybe Tuesday.

We’ll then get some drier air for the middle of next week before perhaps a meaningful push of cooler, fall-like air and some showers and storms for the end of next week and the following weekend. It’s still a bit early for details, but that could be our first true prolonged taste of fall starting next Thursday, Friday, or Saturday.

Until then, watch for high fire danger today and enjoy more comfortable weather tomorrow and this weekend!
