Long stretch of unusually warm weather ahead for Colorado

Most of the state will be dry with only scattered mountain showers expected.

DENVER — FORECAST BY: 9NEWS Weather Impact Team Meteorologist Chris Spears

THE FORECAST AT A GLANCE:

Hopefully you enjoyed the brief taste of fall weather we had this week because it will feel more like the middle of summer for the next several days. It’s all due to a big ridge of high pressure that will dominate the western part of the country into next week.

Typically, as we move into the middle of September, we see afternoon highs in the lower and middle 80s in Denver. But for at least the next 5 or 6 days, our afternoon highs will be running anywhere from 5-10 degrees above normal.

If you are hoping for a little rain to beat the heat, we have some bad news. Most of the state will be on the dry side with the exception of a few mountain showers and storms each afternoon.

There is always a chance for a few of those to drift onto the plains but that chance is very low. You may, however, get some afternoon clouds from time to time, which if that happens, it will help to cool you off!

By the middle of next week a storm system will approach Colorado from the west. That will kick up the wind which isn’t good news with this very warm weather. We will have to keep a close eye on the fire danger by next Wednesday and Thursday.

So far this season we have had 57 days in Denver with a high of 90 degrees of more, and we could add a few more to that number. If we happen to add at least 3 more days this month we will break into the Top 5 list of seasons with the most 90 degree days.
